A Systematic Review of Artificial Intelligence in Education: An Analysis of Trends, Benefits, and Challenges in Pakistan

Abstract

AI’s application in the country’s educational sector is nascent and largely uncoordinated due to inadequate infrastructure, inconsistent and ill-defined policies, low levels of digital literacy, and AI’s application in education and ethics. To achieve this, the author employed the PRISMA framework to identify, assess, and analyze a variety of publications, including peer-reviewed publications, conference papers, reports, and policy papers published between 2015 and 2026. The data and information collected, analyzed, and interpreted in this study indicate that AI has played a significant and positive role in improving a range of educational services and processes. The author of this study argues that AI has the ability to significantly improve the overall quality and increase the accessibility of educational services in Pakistan. In order to realize the positive impacts of AI, the author argues that a range of policies must be developed and implemented by the State to improve its educational services.  In particular, the author advocates for integrated and coordinated digital educational infrastructure, educational flexible and innovative curriculum and pedagogical frameworks, and educator professional development and training. This research elaborates the ramifications for policy and draws potential avenues for future research regarding the sustainable incorporation of AI into the educational framework of Pakistan.
